Main duties of the job

What You'll Do

Lead and Inspire: Provide leadership to the Cancer Centre, engaging and motivating teams to deliver outstanding care.
Drive Performance: Take responsibility for operational management, ensuring delivery of cancer performance targets across finance, waiting lists, workforce, and quality.
Strategic Collaboration: Work closely with the Deputy Chief Operating Officer to develop and execute strategic plans for cancer services.
Staff Development: Oversee staffing levels and training to ensure a highly skilled workforce.
Transformational Leadership: Lead service improvement projects and drive continuous innovation within the Cancer Centre.

Job responsibilities

Leadership

To provide visible inspirational leadership so that all staff in the Cancer Centre and those managing cancer pathways across the Care Groups are engaged and motivated to support safe and effective patient care.

To foster a culture that promotes openness and where people have the confidence to speak up ensuring that communication mechanisms are operating effectively in the Cancer Centre and across the Care Groups.

To foster a climate of innovation and improvement for all services in the Cancer Centre, including encouraging staff to identify further opportunities for improvement.

To support the Deputy Chief Operating Officer in the delivery of the strategic plans for Cancer Services ensuring they are consistent with the aims and objectives of the Trust and ensure that the plans fully reflect the service needs of the Trust.

To line manage the senior Cancer Centre Team (where appropriate)

To deputise for the Deputy Chief Operating Officer on matters relating to Cancer performance.

Operational Performance

To work collaboratively with all Care Groups to support the improvement of cancer pathways.

To work with clinicians to ensure that professional staff have an opportunity to influence the management, planning of and development of cancer pathways.

To be responsible for daily operational management of the Cancer Centre including performance, quality, finance and workforce KPIs,

In conjunction with the Deputy Chief Operating Officer to take responsibility for key elements of modernisation/transformational projects including service re-design and any associated workforce change requirements

Support the Deputy Chief Operating Officer with the development and maintenance of robust performance management systems to support each specialty to deliver their operational performance standards.

Hold specialties to account for the delivery of cancer targets.

Oversee the production of regular performance monitoring data for the Care Groups, trust committees and external stakeholders and to take early action to ensure that action plans are in place to address any shortfalls.

To support Care Groups to formulate business cases for service and capital development and lead the Care Groups capital expenditure plans

Lead achievement of all cancer operational targets, focusing on improving patient care and developing new ways of working

Developing action plans to improve performance and sustain performance across all key cancer targets.

Oversee the financial turnaround and FEP plans across the Cancer Centre.

Staffing

Ensure that all non-clinical staff undertake the prescribed Trust induction programme and undergo appropriate refresher training.

Ensure that line managers adhere to HR policies and performance indicators

Undertake regular reviews of staffing levels in the Cancer Centre to ensure that the right number of staff with the right skills are in place to deliver current and predicted future activity.

Write business cases or workforce change papers to implement any shifts in staff demand.

To complete the Cancer Centres non-clinical workforce planning and training needs documentation

Trust Wide

To ensure compliance with Trust HR policies and processes, including recruitment, performance management and training for their team.

To support the investigation of complaints and incidents within the Cancer Centre.

To chair hearings as appropriate.
