We are on a mission to make home moving easier. Home movers across the UK spend more than a billion minutes on Rightmove each month and our website and apps receive over 140 million visits per month. To work towards our mission, we need Engineering Managers to support our engineers to innovative and produce exciting solutions for our internal users, working on in house applications and microservices integrated with third party applications that underpin how Rightmove operates.  Our Engineering Managers help engineers make great technical decisions while developing their skills and experience.  They support great team-working, set technical standards and direction, and grow strong communities of technical practice.

At Rightmove we work in autonomous cross-functional teams using Agile processes. Each team owns a part of the Rightmove experience made up of design, product, engineering and testing specialists. We recognise that to deliver the best products and features that satisfy millions of users, thousands of agents and hundreds of passionate Rightmovers, we need to work effectively as a healthy, high performing team.

Typical week as an Engineering Manager:

Looking at ways of improving the product development lifecycle
Exploring new ways to deliver frequently and safely into production
Coaching and developing your people, with regular 1-to-1s and continuous feedback
Driving a culture of craftsmanship and quality, establishing high technical standards and continuous improvement
Supporting engineers to actively manage technical debt
Helping teams anticipate and mitigate delivery risks
Building technical communities, where teams are encouraged to share knowledge and help each other
Hiring great people for the team’s long-term success and deliver an amazing candidate experience
Staying up to date with the latest technologies and approaches to software development

We're looking for someone:

Experience leading the design and maintenance of back-office and admin systems, including integration with third-party systems, APIs and middleware.
Is comfortable leading cross-functional engineering teams covering, Java (Spring Boot), Javascript (React) and Typescript.
Is confident in engaging with senior technical stakeholders, including Principal Engineers and Architects, on subjects such as system design and databases (e.g., Oracle), as well as cloud-based solutions like CockroachDB
Can establish great coding standards and encourages those around to do the same.
Creates an environment that encourages people to try out new things and learn from their mistakes.
Is comfortable with complex problem solving and applies the right technology solution.
Champions security best practices, data privacy, resilience and scalability ensuring they are at the forefront of decision-making.
Strong understanding of incident management, monitoring, and system reliability
Understands the wider architectural impact and ensures continuing improvements to the platform.
Encourages open two-way feedback so that teams share honestly, early and often.
Expertise in Agile methodologies (e.g. Scrum, Kanban) and delivery best practices
Is passionate about technology and engineering, embracing diverse perspectives and approaches.
