Senior Front End Engineer II

The role
As a Senior Software Engineer II, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality software and products, able to be deployed frequently and safely into production. Working with similarly minded people, you will help to shape the way we use and adopt technologies and practices, with a modern engineering mindset. You are an advocate of test automation and have a clear view of where to make the best use of it.
At Rightmove we work as part of autonomous cross-functional teams in an agile environment. Each team owns a part of the Rightmove experience made up of design, product and engineering. You will collaborate to ensure we deliver quality solutions that satisfy millions of users, thousands of agents and hundreds of passionate Rightmovers. You will be responsible for defining solutions to business and technical problems in a way which ensures maintainability, scalability and high performance standards. We work collaboratively across a mix of product and centralised teams, together working towards Rightmove’s strategy.
Key Responsibilities:
Developing features and improvements to our applications, with the use of Typescript, React, Express, Node, Kubernetes and Gitlab
Collaborating with internal stakeholders and the team to find solutions to complex problems
Contributing to key decisions, including which features to include during team sprints
Leading architecture and system design of complex projects alongside your team, Architects and Principal Engineers
Contributing to engineering forums and take part in initiatives to improve the practices of the engineering discipline at Rightmove
Coach and mentor less experienced engineers to help them develop their technical skills
Estimating user stories
Reviewing other developers’ code and debating options as a team
Investigating and promoting the latest, emergent technologies
Working in an Agile environment

Role: Site Reliability Engineering Manager (Website Infrastructure & Operations Manager)

Reporting to: Head of Technology Operations
The Platform and Reliability Engineering Team are responsible for the technology platforms and services that underpin the Rightmove website, ensuring it is available, secure and performing to a world-class standard. We strive to deliver annual availability of at least 99.99% (less than 5 mins downtime a month).
The Site Reliability Engineering Manager’s focus is to ensure their teams maintain our datacentre and cloud website infrastructure, safely migrate services to Google Cloud, and enable others to easily manage the reliability of production services across the Rightmove Website Estate.
A typical week as the Site Reliability Engineering Manager might involve:
Ensuring the right people, process and tooling are in place to maintain a healthy, resilient, and secure datacentre and cloud website platform.
Creating and managing technical plans for the migration of applications and infrastructure to Google Cloud.
Developing cloud engineering and operations skills within your teams
Working through supplier due diligence process for support contract renewals to ensure key components are kept in support.
Working with engineering managers, product owners, and engineers to optimise and improve service health
Identify, plan and implement improvements to the incident management process

Role: Platform Engineer (Developer Experience)

Reporting to: Platform Engineering Manager
This role represents a unique opportunity for a mid-level engineer with a strong Java foundation to expand their expertise into Platform Engineering and join a team prioritising automation, observability, and delivering value in iterations, while directly shaping developer productivity through self-service tooling and standardised workflows.
The initial focus of the role is to maintain existing Java services, owned by the Developer Experience team. The team is currently working on migrating services to the Cloud. The role will then shift to enhance our Internal Developer Platform solution, to abstract the infrastructure complexities for developers, enabling developers to build and deliver microservices efficiently.
Success in this role requires balancing hands-on Java service maintenance with platform architecture, CI/CD pipeline design, and developer enablement.
A typical week as a Platform Engineer in Developer Experience team might involve:â¯â¯
Maintaining Java services owned by the Developer Experience team.
Working with developers, providing support
Delivering training workshops to our internal customers, when necessary, and improving documentation.
Working on platform tasks and learning more about the technologies we use.
Expanding self-service capabilities in the internal platform to cover common use cases.

Create Gitlab CI templates
Standardise configuration and monitoring
Developer Support: participate in the rota to provide support to developers for platform related issues in areas that Developer Experience owns. We do a weekly review and brainstorm ways of reducing the number of requests through automation and building auditable self-service tooling, documentation and training.
Operational Excellence: participate in the out of hours on-call rota (1 week/month - competitive additional compensation offered).
Required Skills
Experience with modern Java: to write clean, efficient, and well-documented code.
Experience with test frameworks: JUnit and Mockito is essential.
Debugging skills: to be able to identify and resolve issues in complex systems.
Gradle Fundamentals: to write and maintain complex Gradle build files.
Dependency Management: to understand different dependency configurations and resolving conflicts.
Multi-Project Builds: to be able to set up and manage multi-project builds in Gradle
Performance Optimization: a good understanding of Gradle builds speed optimisations and efficiency is a big plus.
Springboot knowledge for the purpose of library upgrades.

At Rightmove we work in autonomous cross-functional teams using Agile processes. Each team owns a part of the Rightmove experience made up of design, product, engineering and testing specialists. You will collaborate to ensure we deliver quality solutions that satisfy millions of users, thousands of agents and hundreds of passionate Rightmovers. You will be responsible for defining solutions to business and technical problems in a way which ensures maintainability, scalability and high-performance standards.
What you'll be doing
Developing features and improvements to our applications using Java, Spring Boot, Elasticsearch, Kafka, Gradle, Hibernate, Couchbase, SQL, Docker
Collaborating with internal contacts and the teams to find solutions to complex problems.
Taking ownership of key technical decisions and project delivery.
Balancing new deliveries against technical debt, and finding the right timing for the two.
Ensuring delivery quality, including meeting security standards and providing for future extensibility of the codebase.
Communicating with stakeholders and third parties to understand the needs and how they link together.
Investigating and promoting the latest emergent technologies. Finding opportunities to attach these to the business roadmap in ways that benefit both the business and the tech function.

We're looking for someone who
Has extensive commercial experience of writing applications with Java, Springboot and Kafka.
Has been the lead on technically complex projects where you have assigned work to multiple engineers.

Has previously fed in to strong TDD practices, and can debate the pros and cons of left-shifting in the pipeline.
