The new role
Reporting to the Head of Technology, this influential role is responsible for leading the delivery of technology infrastructure, cloud services, networks, and cybersecurity solutions to the business and a workforce of more than 3,000 people. It combines IT governance and team management with hands-on delivery and execution. The role is based in the Greater Exeter Area but with responsibility business-wide, requiring occasional travel to other locations. This is an exciting time to join the company as it embarks on a major business transformation programme focusing on digitalisation, cloud adoption, and a planned public cloud migration.
Leading, motivating, and developing a team responsible for delivering Infrastructure, Cloud Services, Networks, and Cybersecurity solutions for the business.
Working across the wider Technology team, supporting other managers with the delivery of the broader Technology roadmap across Solutions, Integration, Data Services, and Software Development.
Contributing to the ongoing evolution of the strategic roadmap across Infrastructure, Cloud Services, Networks, Cybersecurity, and Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery, and owning the execution of this strategy within the Technology function.
Leading the continuous improvement of information security, business continuity, and disaster recovery strategies, including the development and update of policies, plans, and procedures, as well as the governance to routinely test them.
Responding to IT security due-diligence requests and audits and acting as an authority internally on matters relating to IT Security.
As part of the team, delivering the strategic roadmap along with ongoing maintenance, monitoring, optimisation, and security of:
Infrastructure services, including a dual-site on-premises core infrastructure environment (VMware) and a growing cloud estate (Azure) comprising PaaS, IaaS, and SaaS.
A predominantly Windows Server OS environment hosting a multitude of infrastructure services, line-of-business applications, and various database technologies, including SQL Server.
Over 50 site Local Area Networks comprising Cisco Catalyst or Meraki switching and Meraki Access Points.
The business Wide Area Network comprising Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN with various underlay technologies (Ethernet, FTTP, SOGEA, LTE, Starlink) and Fortigate firewalls.
Desktop services, including Backup, Endpoint Protection, standard PC/Laptop builds, and managed print.
Domain services, including Active Directory, WSUS, File Shares, Users and Groups, and GPO.
Cloud services, such as Entra and Microsoft 365, including Exchange Online, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, and Office Applications.
Mobile services for corporate mobility, including Mobile Device Management for mostly Android-based devices with some iOS.
Security solutions, such as internet security, web application firewalls, patch management, risk/vulnerability management, managed detection and response, and managed security awareness.
Site IoT solutions, including CCTV, Sensors, Access Control, T&A Terminals, and warehouse automation solutions.
Optimising solutions to reduce overall cyber and business continuity risk cost-effectively.
What is needed to succeed
Broad IT Infrastructure experience across virtualised server environments, networking and cloud with a range of technologies/vendors – alignment to any of those mentioned above as well as any relevant Azure certifications would be an advantage.
Demonstrable line management and team leadership experience.
Experience with Microsoft modern workspace technologies, including Entra and 365 services.
Public cloud experience, ideally Azure, but AWS and GCP are also considered.
Understanding of ITIL principles.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely at all levels within the organisation.
A full UK Driving Licence as travel will be required for this role.
