About The Program

The NCIA internship is a 6-month program based at one of our key hubs in The Netherlands, Belgium or Portugal. Our internship opportunities start from either 1 March or 1 September with the start date being dependent on the timeline to secure the required security clearance to work within the NATO community. During an internship, you will join and support a diverse international team and simultaneously learn from our experts via on-the-job training, working independently on purposeful projects or initiatives during your tenure.

About The Internship

Internship duration: 6 months

Location: Mons, Belgium

Service Management and Control (SMC) is accountable for the full lifecycle of support for Service Delivery Management that includes strategy, design, transition, operation and continuous service improvement. SMC enables standardised ways of working across the NATO enterprise, as well as strengthening network protection and enterprise stability via Change and Configuration Management. SMC provides the common components, toolsets, expertise, and human resources to support seamless, integrated and correlated management of services and automation support for key processes through integrated event, asset and Configuration Management. SMC also orchestrates product lines (Service Lines, CSUs) across the NCI Agency to achieve and exceed customer expectations within the terms and conditions of a given OLA/SLA.

Internship Duties will involve:

Change Management Support: Assist with processing, categorizing, assessing, reviewing, scheduling, implementing, and recording change requests.

Change Advisory Board (CAB): Support the setup and management of CAB and Emergency CAB meetings.

Cyber Security & Patching: Contribute to managing changes related to cybersecurity incidents and software patching.

Release & Deployment: Assist in software validation, deployment planning, lifecycle management, and stakeholder engagement.

Configuration Management: Support the tracking and management of configuration items using IT Service Management tools.

Reporting & Analysis: Assist with documentation, reporting, and process adherence across ITSM functions.

Communication & Planning: Contribute to coordination tasks, stakeholder communications, and project-related activities.

Documentation Standards: Gain experience in IT governance, compliance, and quality assurance documentation.

About you:

Business administration :

Change control :

Applies tools, techniques and processes to administer, track, log, report on change requests.Applies change control procedures for standard, low-risk changes.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to apply for our internship program, you will need to meet the following criteria:

You are a national of a NATO member country
You are currently studying towards a university-level degree or have recently graduated in the past 12 months
A thorough knowledge of one of the two NATO languages, both written and spoken, is essential and some knowledge of the other is desirable. Most of the work of the NCI Agency is conducted in the English language.

Compensation

Belgium

You will be compensated at a fixed taxable rate of 1,286.09 EUR per month, based on 38 hours of work per week and for reasonable travel expenses to start on day 1 and to return to your home location once the internship is complete.

We are looking for a driven and enthusiastic Network Security Engineer who will take on the following roles and responsibilities:

Operate cyber security gateway systems (firewalls, proxies, email gateway, VPNs, etc);
Assist with cyber security advice and provide Level 1, Level 2 support as required;
Execute the security incident management process and advise on improvements;
Support vulnerability assessments and Security Testing and Verification (ST&V) plans;
Responsible for monitoring of assigned systems and portions of the networks, including support to local cyber security training and awareness programs;

Based in Mons, Belgium you will join the Agency as we embark on a journey to transform our IT services to support NATO’s Digital Endeavour. You will join NATO Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), which is responsible for planning and executing all lifecycle management activities for cyber security. In executing this responsibility, NCSC provides specialist cyber security-related services covering the spectrum of scientific, technical, acquisition, operations, maintenance, and sustainment support, throughout the lifecycle of NATO Communications and Information Systems (CIS).

We are looking for driven and enthusiastic Cyber Security Infrastructure Specialists who will take on the following roles and responsibilities:

Design, implement, manage, and maintain the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) systems;
Ensure the secure and reliable operation of the PKI services, supporting critical business functions and compliance requirements;
Drive the adoption of PKI practices for efficient deployment and management of PKI infrastructure;
Research and recommend emerging technologies, tools, and best practices for PKI and cryptographic services;
Lead the deployment of new NPKI-related tools, features, and enhancements, ensuring seamless integration with existing infrastructure;
Track and evaluate team performance, providing feedback and addressing issues.

Your performance during the recruitment process will be the primary factor in determining the post and grade you will be offered (if applicable).

About you:

The valuable knowledge and experience that you bring to this role are:

Bachelor’s degree at a nationally recognised/certified University in a related discipline and 2/3 years post-related experience.Or exceptionally, the lack of a university degree may be compensated by the demonstration of a candidate’s particular abilities or experience that is/are of interest to NCI Agency, that is, at least 6/10 years extensive and progressive expertise in duties related to the function of the post;
At least 2/3 years practical experience of designing, implementing, and maintaining security infrastructure;
5+ years of experience in managing critical PKI systems with minimum of 50.000 customers or comparable cryptographic infrastructures;
Expertise in NPKI technologies, including X.509 certificates, Certificate Authorities, and related protocols (e.g., OCSP, CRL, S/MIME);
Experience with Microsoft Active Directory Certificate Services (ADCS) or other enterprise PKI solutions (e.g., Venafi, DigiCert, EJBCA);
Strong understanding of cryptography, encryption algorithms, and secure key management practices;
Practical experience identifying and mitigating security vulnerabilities;
At least 2 years of experience in management of CMS (Card Management System);
Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage and coordinate a technical team;
Experience with HSMs and their integration with PKI systems;
Proficiency in system administration (Windows/Linux), network security, and troubleshooting;
Familiarity with compliance frameworks and standards (e.g., NIST);
Ability and desire to stay up to date with the latest security technologies and trends;
Strong communication and analytical skills;
Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
