Job Description
More about our mission and what we offer.
Join Wise – One of Europe’s Fastest-Growing Companies
At Wise, we’re on a mission: to make money without borders the new normal. With over 16 million customers worldwide and growing fast, we’re building a better way for people and businesses to move money globally — quickly, securely, and affordably.
The current banking system? It’s outdated. Sending, spending, or receiving money across borders is still too slow, too expensive, and too complicated.
So we’re building something better. From the ground up.
We're looking for a Backend Engineer to join our team and help us create a scalable, secure, and reliable global platform. You’ll work on high-impact projects that make it easier for people and businesses everywhere to send and receive money, no matter where they are.
About the Team: Receive Risk
The Receive Risk team is a global product team focused on making it safe and seamless for customers to receive money into their Wise accounts. We build intelligent systems and controls to detect and stop fraudsters and scammers — protecting both Wise and our customers.
We support all of our receive products (like local and global account details, payment links, and invoicing) and work closely with our Financial Crime teams to ensure these tools are low-friction for good users, and high-friction for the bad ones.
Qualifications
What We’re Looking For
A strong product mindset and genuine passion for user experience — you prioritize customer value and make data-driven decisions
Clear communication skills — you can explain complex technical ideas to non-technical audiences
Self-starter attitude with a collaborative spirit — you work well independently and across teams
Ability to break down complex problems into shippable milestones that deliver value fast
Experience in building web applications and distributed systems in a production environment
Clean, efficient, and well-tested code is your standard — you’re big on performance and maintainability
You follow and promote best practices, including CI/CD and code reviews
Experience with relational and non-relational databases, query optimization, and schema design is a plus
Familiarity with Java, Spring Boot, and messaging systems like Kafka is a plus
Don’t tick every box? That’s okay — we don’t expect you to know everything.
What Does Success Look Like
You’ve found your footing in the team and understand how your work connects to the broader mission
You’re using Wise’s values to guide your decision-making
You understand the root causes of customer payment issues and actively help solve them
You’re contributing to automation efforts that help us scale efficiently
You’ve built empathy for our users and the real-world impact of our product
You’re solving technical challenges and helping us build a world-class global banking product
