Project Overview:

Our client have a programme delivering a new capability to the UK Environment Agency. The programme is developing a new user interface hosted on gov.uk and requires a software engineer to help with development of web based features.

BPSS clearance is required.

You will be a key member of our software development team, collaborating with multiple internal teams and external partners on web application projects. Working in a dynamic environment, you will contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of applications using modern web technologies.

You will undertake the following activities:
• Develop and maintain web applications using Node.js, Hapi.js, and React

• Implement responsive user interfaces following GDS styling guidelines and CSS best practices

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software solutions

• Participate in Agile development processes including planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives.

• Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues across the application stack

• Contribute to code reviews to ensure quality and knowledge sharing

• Support containerization of applications using Docker

• Assist with deployment and management of applications in AWS environments

• Document code, processes, and technical decisions for knowledge sharing

• Continuously learn and adapt to new technologies and methodologies

Required Skills:

• Experience with JavaScript and modern web development approaches.
• Knowledge of Node.js backend development
• Familiarity with React or similar frontend frameworks
• Understanding of RESTful API design and implementation
• Basic knowledge of CSS and responsive web design principles
• Strong problem-solving abilities and analytical thinking
• Excellent collaboration skills and ability to work with multiple teams
• Eagerness to learn new technologies and approaches
• Understanding of version control systems (Git)
• Good communication skills for effective team collaboration

Desired Skills:
• Experience with Hapi.js framework
• Knowledge of GDS (Government Digital Service) styling guidelines
• Experience with Atlassian DevOps tools (Jira, Bitbucket, Bamboo)
• Familiarity with Docker containers and containerization concepts
• Understanding of AWS services, particularly ECR, EKS, and Secrets Management
• Knowledge of AWS data solutions including ElastiCache and DynamoDB
• Experience working with geospatial data and related tools
• Knowledge of HTTPS, security best practices, and web application security
• Experience working in Agile development environments
• Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and automated testing
• Previous experience in collaborative, multi-team projects
Ability to mentor junior developers and share knowledge effectively
