GSL Education invites you to apply for an SEMH Teaching Assistant (SEMH TA) role in Chesterfield. This role presents a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the well-being and academic progress of students who face challenges in managing their emotions and behaviours.

Role Overview: As an SEMH Teaching Assistant (SEMH TA), you will play a crucial role in providing tailored support to students who face barriers to learning due to social, emotional, or mental health difficulties. Working alongside teachers, SENCOs and pastoral staff, you will help create a structured and nurturing learning environment where students feel valued, understood and motivated.

Key Responsibilities

Support students with SEMH difficulties in both individual and group settings, encouraging their participation and helping them regulate their emotions and behaviours.
Work collaboratively with teachers and support staff to develop and implement tailored learning strategies for students with SEMH.
Provide emotional support to students in times of difficulty, helping them manage stress, anxiety and frustration constructively.
Encourage positive social interactions among students, promoting the development of healthy peer relationships.
Help students to stay focused and engaged in lessons, assisting with academic tasks where needed.
Observe, record and report students’ progress and well-being, liaising with teachers, parents and external professionals as required.
Create a nurturing environment that allows students to feel secure and valued, reducing anxiety, and fostering a sense of belonging within the school.

Requirements

Experience working as a Teaching Assistant or in a similar role supporting students with SEMH, SEN, or behavioural difficulties.
A Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning or equivalent (e.g., Childcare, Youth Work) would be advantageous.
A clear understanding of SEMH difficulties and the impact these can have on students' academic performance and emotional well-being.
A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle (essential for travel to various school locations) is required.
The ability to remain calm under pressure, providing a stable and reassuring presence to students in moments of emotional distress.
Patience, empathy, and strong communication skills to support students effectively and work closely with other professionals.
The ability to develop positive, trusting relationships with students, helping them to feel comfortable in a classroom environment.
Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
