Job Summary

An opportunity has arisen for a qualified Clinical Vascular Scientist to join a small but friendly established team.

The vascular lab conducts all routine vascular ultrasound scans as well as specialising in popliteal artery entrapment assessment, working alongside a multidisciplinary team of consultants and physiotherapists.

The job is based in the vascular lab at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary which has three modern Philips Epiq ultrasound scanners as well as specialist examination beds designed specifically for vascular ultrasound tests.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be required to conduct all routine vascular ultrasound examinations to support the vascular surgeons as well as inpatient and emergency care services. Participation in quality improvement projects and audit will be required as part of the role.

Job responsibilities

Key results from the job holder

To provide and deliver a high quality and effective vascular ultrasound service by independently performing examinations, interpreting the images, producing and issuing a report to the referring clinician and ensuring an optimum patient experience.
Perform and report specialist vascular ultrasound procedures and ABPI measurement.
Responsible for checking, vetting and prioritising ultrasound requests.
To be constantly seeking ways to improve standards and performance.
To act as a clinical expert in vascular ultrasound
Participate in departmental audits and research projects e.g. Post and under graduate research studies if needed
Assist in production and update of patient information sheets when required.
Awareness of NHSLA and NICE guidelines
Responsibility for effective service delivery.
Ultrasound safety issues in accordance with B.M.U.S. guidelines.
To provide a highly specialised technical service using Ultrasound scans to carry out diagnosis.
To produce independently a report on the Ultrasound examination
Medical scans are interpreted during and immediately after production of hard copy images the report is documented immediately and transcribed.
Verbal consent is sought for all scans
To be actively involved in proposals to change Ultrasound protocols and keeping Ultrasound policies and procedures up to date.

Planning and Organisational Duties

To participate in and keep records of equipment testing e.g. QA and post installation
Plans and prioritises own, (and trainee/HCA) workload.
To maintain quality control procedures
To report equipment faults.
To participate in an effective patient appointment system- monitoring appointment diaries and booking allocations as and when necessary
To be flexible and provide cover for colleagues as requested by lead vascular scientist.
Organisation of and participation in meetings, CPD and audit and attend MDT.
Involvement in maintaining stocks levels of items
Involvement in the vetting /prepping of referrals using multiple computer systems

Communications and Key Working Relationships

To liaise with other departments, units, hospitals and other agencies as necessary
To attend and contribute to clinical audit and MDT meetings
To use the Radiology Information System (CRIS), Prism and PACS to maintain and update accurate patient and departmental records to the standards expected within the directorate.
To keep up to date with the Trusts information and Departmental policies.
To safeguard at all times confidentiality of information relating to patients and staff.

Responsibility for Finance

To assist in the evaluation and purchase of equipment taking into consideration costs and suitability to provide a suitable level of service.
To ensure the responsible use of all Ultrasound equipment and resources

Responsibility for Human Resources

To support the departmental induction process for new work colleagues.

Responsibility for Health & Safety

Compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 the post holder is required to fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards, and a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions.
To undertake all mandatory training courses including those with regard to Health and Safety and be familiar with departmental procedures and protocols
Regularly attending both theoretical and practical moving and handling sessions.
Ensure the health and safety of all patients during ultrasound procedures, which are undertaken both within the department and on the ward as required.
To support the departmental induction process for new work colleagues.
To supervise all members of staff in the performance of their duties.
To take part in Q.A measures in keeping with clinical governance
To ensure the responsible use of all Ultrasound equipment and resources.
Support vascular surgeons with interventional procedures
