Main duties of the job

Applications are invited to apply for the position of Junior Fellow in Critical Care.

The successful candidates will join a large, dynamic critical care team in providing a high-quality clinical care for our patients. These posts are for a year.

Previous Critical Care Experience Is Desired But Not Essential.

Applicants from all acute specialities including anaesthetics, medical, emergency medicine or surgical backgrounds will be considered.

The post will provide training and experience in all aspects of intensive care medicine in a large multidisciplinary unit.

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) General Intensive Care Unit (GICU) is a very busy 32-bed unit and one of the largest acute teaching hospitals trusts on the south coast of England. We are rated as “outstanding” by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), and our clinical outcomes are one of the best in the UK.

This post is intended for Junior Fellows who wish to gain experience in managing Level 3 and Level 2 patients in an Intensive Care Unit. This post will provide an excellent opportunity to gain experience assessing and managing all critically ill patients with supervision from a dedicated intensive care consultant.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Full GMC Registration

Medical Degree

At least 2 Years Post Qualification

FRCA / MRCP / FRCS / MCEM or equivalent

Current ALS / ATLS certification

Previous experience in an acute speciality

Good verbal and written communication

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post.

The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.

Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular.

Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)

Basic Salary – MT03 £49,909

Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview

Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.

Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.

Qualifications, Training & Experience

Essential criteria

GMC registration with a licence to practise
Medical Degree
At least 2 years post qualification
Previous experience in an acute speciality
Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
Minimum 6 months NHS experience

Desirable criteria

FRCA / MRCP / FRCS / MCEM or equivalent
Current ALS / ATLS certification
Previous Intensive Care Medicine or Anaesthesia experience within the NHS

Aptitudes and skills

Desirable criteria

Basic IT skills
Completion of foundation competencies or equivalent
Intensive Care skills
