Role Overview
We are looking for an Accessibility Tester to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will ensure that digital services comply with accessibility standards, making them inclusive for all users, including those with disabilities. You will play a critical role in evaluating and improving the accessibility of GOV.UK digital services.
Key Responsibilities
Compliance Testing: Ensure compliance with accessibility standards such as WCAG 2.2 AA or AAA and Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations 2018.
Assistive Technology Testing: Test compatibility with screen readers and other assistive technologies such as magnifiers, speech input, and braille output devices.
Audit & Evaluation: Conduct audits on web applications using a range of tools, both automated and manual, to assess accessibility compliance.
Issue Documentation & Remediation: Document accessibility issues, provide remediation guidance, and offer insight into the root causes of identified issues.
User Testing: Conduct user testing with individuals who have access needs identified in user personas to ensure digital services are fully inclusive.
Continuous Improvement: Stay up to date with the latest accessibility standards, tools, and technologies, including AI accessibility tooling, to continuously improve testing processes.
Required Skills & Experience
Communication Skills:
Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively document findings and provide remediation guidance.
Ability to collaborate with developers, designers, and product teams to improve accessibility.
Technical Skills:
Familiarity with accessibility testing tools such as Axe, WAVE, Lighthouse, and NVDA/JAWS screen readers.
Experience in conducting both automated and manual accessibility audits.
Knowledge of HTML, ARIA, CSS, and JavaScript best practices for accessibility.
Understanding of inclusive design principles and their application in web development.
Experience working with WCAG guidelines and government digital accessibility standards.
Awareness of different agile methodologies and ability to work effectively in an agile, collaborative environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Qualification Certificates:
CPACC, WAS, or other recognized accessibility certifications (or equivalent experience).
Security Clearance (BPSS and/or SC) or willingness to undergo the clearance process required to work on sensitive government projects.
Nice to Have Skills:
Experience of working in UK public sector engagements.
Familiarity with the GDS design system and user research methodologies.
Experience with AI-powered accessibility testing tools.
Knowledge of mobile accessibility testing for iOS and Android applications.
