An excellent opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated data science professional with a genuine passion for machine learning, data analytics, and problem-solving to join our growing data science capability. The hybrid-working role, based from our Leeds, Manchester, London, or Newcastle offices, offers an opportunity to contribute to and help shape the development of our expanding data science function.
This position will allow you to work collaboratively with experts across disciplines and play an active role in influencing the team’s direction and best practices. The successful candidate will join a growing data science team and have the opportunity to help influence its direction, contributing to best practices, new initiatives, and collaboration across the business.

SLR’s data science function provides expert support and advice on AI, machine learning, data analytics, and digital tool development across SLR’s key strategic initiatives. As part of this role, you will work closely with specialists from different teams to develop innovative solutions, establish best practices, and enhance our data science offering. Projects are primarily located throughout Europe but with an increasing focus on international opportunities.

The role
Day-to-day responsibilities will include:
Working with internal stakeholders to create data science solutions for environmental and sustainability challenges
Using Python and popular data science libraries (like Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, and xarray) to handle data, perform analysis, and build models
Building reproducible workflows and apply software best practices, such as unit tests, CI/CD, and version control with Git
Communicating clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, including through presentations, workshops, and client discussions
Keeping up with the latest developments in AI, data science, and sustainability
Documenting work, code, and findings to ensure reproducibility and knowledge sharing
Playing a key role in contributing to the growth of the data science function by improving processes, sharing knowledge, mentoring others, and fostering collaboration across the business
About you
We are looking for a Data Scientist with a Bachelor’s degree qualification in mathematical, scientific, engineering or related discipline, as well as:
Strong Python programming skills with experience using data science libraries (like Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, and xarray)
Knowledge of software development best practices, including CI/CD, unit tests and version control
Ability to translate complex problems into practical data science solutions
Experience with machine learning
Experience with cloud platforms for data science (e.g. Azure, AWS, GCP)
Strong analytical skills with a solid understanding of statistics and probability
Effective communication skills, along with the ability to present approaches and contribute to workshops
