Specializes in the development, deployment and execution of controls and defenses to ensure the security, compliance and risk mitigation of the firm's technology infrastructure/data assets and effectively respond to incidents or breaches of information security operations.

The day-to-day

The role is part of Viasat’s Security Operations Team. The Security Engineer should be experienced in the areas of networking, client/server technologies, and analysing log files with the ability to identify false positive and true positive events.
The Security Engineer should be able to analyse incidents and correlate it with appropriate contextual data to determine classification, prioritisation and response to incidents.
Respond immediately to cybersecurity-related incidents and provide a thorough post-event analysis. Investigates intrusion incidents and conduct forensic investigations.
Act as the primary escalation point to Security Analysts monitoring the Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) System & provide initial investigation of security incidents. Take an active part in the containment of incidents, even after they are escalated.
Deliver investigation and remediation activities as a senior member of the Security Incident Response Team. Participate in Security Incident Response Team (SIRT) events: Coordinate with data asset owners and business response plan owners during high severity incidents;
Create and update security event investigation notes, report on open cases, and maintain case data in the Incident Response Management platform.
Monitor threat and vulnerability news services for any relevant information that may impact installed infrastructure. Analyse reports to understand threat campaign(s) techniques, lateral movements and extract indicators of compromise (IOCs).
Continuous engagement with the Threat Intelligence and 24x7 Monitoring teams;
Provide ad-hoc on-call support to review threats and response actions for off-hour critical inciden response;

A University degree level education or equivalent in Information Security, Forensics, or Computer Science; related experience and/or training in the field of IT security monitoring and analysis, cyber threat analysis, and vulnerability analysis.
A Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC) Certified Incident Handler (GCIH), GIAC Certified Intrusion Analyst (GCIA), or equivalent certification would be advantageous.
Intermediate knowledge of Information Security fundamentals, technologies, and design principals.
Proven experience in securing Windows, Linux, Cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP and Oracle) and VM platforms..
Understanding or proven experience of usingh Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) platforms for analysing network and security incidents.
Experience in using Vulnerability Assessment (VA) platforms to identify network and platform risks and mis-configurations. Experience in Security Assessment tools/frameworks.
Knowledge of network security zones, firewall, IDS; Network analysis tools like Wireshark and TCPDump;
Knowledge of log formats for syslog, http logs, DB logs and how to gather forensics for traceability back to event; Knowledge of packet capture and analysis;
Willingness to learn new skills and be self-motivated.
Ability to work in a team environment, to work under pressure and show flexibility.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

What you'll do

The RTO Security Analyst will form part of the frontline 24x7 team that monitors the network for suspicious activity. Analyst will work to protect the organization by detecting and triaging security alerts. The security analyst’s responsibilities will include detailed incident handling across online and on-premises infrastructures, determine attack use cases, following escalation process to contain & mitigate security risks. Security analysts will also need to review & address any detected false positives.

The day-to-day

Security monitoring, managing security cases & tickets, security incident analysis, and other security tasks.
Analysing a variety of security logs to identify actionable events (SIEM reports-alerts-tickets, system, network, security monitoring tools)
Determine the attack type based on the triage of events collected
Demonstrate analytical & technical thinking when triaging system & network events
Ensure all incidents are recorded in the corporate case management platform. Cases must contain a detailed triage will all artifacts and IOCS captured & documented
Participating feedback into the design, implementation, and administration of security tools/ rules to reduce false positives
Ability to analyse data sets, determine the gaps and understand recommended fixes to RTO lead analyst

What you'll need

A University degree level education or equivalent in Information Security, Forensics, or Computer Science; related experience and/or training in the field of IT security monitoring and analysis, cyber threat analysis, and vulnerability analysis.
Understanding of performing technical level analysis and interpretation of information from SOC systems; incident identification/analysis, escalation procedures, and reduction of false positives.
3-5 Years experience within the industry
Good technical understanding computing protocols, authentication mechanisms & attack TTP’s
Intermediate knowledge of Information Security fundamentals, technologies, and design principals.
Understanding or proven experience in securing Windows, Linux, Oracle and VM platforms.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

What You'll Do

The Advanced Concepts and Technologies (ACT) team sits within Viasat’s Global Space Networks division. The ACT team leads the exploration of breakthrough innovations by focusing on early-stage business opportunities, exploring various advanced system concepts and performing technology feasibilities and trade-off. The ACT team is responsible for:

Enabling a pipeline of innovation opportunities by entering into partnerships
Performing due diligence on internally and externally identified opportunities
Performing in-depth technological and business model analysis, trade-offs and studies
Building and delivering proof of concepts, proof of value and prototypes to validate these opportunities, delivered through the management of multidisciplinary and cross divisional team structures.


As a member of this team you will support exploring, validating and unlocking the value of new advanced concepts, ranging from satellites, network infrastructures, down to components or algorithms. You will help shape and support the design, prototype and delivery of new service concepts. These can start spread across deep technical feasibility studies or move to hands-on proof of concepts demonstrated over the air. You will perform technological assessments and determine if the technology has potential to be disruptive, whether Viasat should be a key player, and/or protect the business from risks associated with it. You will be expected to take an entrepreneurial approach to your work seeking out opportunities proactively and making connections between different external partners and potential new business lines.

The day-to-day

You will support in the development of existing projects which range from early stage exploratory concepts, to larger (but still early stage development) programs with external and internal business funding. The activities can range from typical systems engineering activities (requirements management, design documentation, verification and testing activities etc), to concept development, assisting with technical inputs to relevant bids, and working with teams across the business on strategy and implementation.

Familiarity with concepts such as: Internet of things, 5G and its challenges, Inter-satellite link communication technologies, position navigation and timing, outer space communication systems, Space debris management, Low Earth Orbit satellites architectures and orbital dynamics, High Altitude Platforms market and capabilities, in-orbit manufacturing, Lunar communications, etc
Knowledge of running orbital simulations and RF link budgets across various modulation schemes, coding and frequency bands within the satellite and terrestrial frequency bands.
